Math Materials in the Adolescent Environment: A 3-Part Learning Journey
Details
Presented by: Victoria Pinciotti, Joshua Shanklin
For: Secondary I teachers (of students grades 7 – 9)
CPD hours: 1.5
Format: Self-guided webinar, individual experiment, and live video chat
Available: On Demand
Think like a scientist and design an experiment to enable you and your adolescent students to engage with math materials in new, meaningful ways.
This 3-part learning journey consists of an on-demand webinar, an in-person experiment, and a follow-up video chat:
Part 1: You will begin by watching an on-demand webinar in which the presenters will explain when and why you should use math materials in your adolescent classroom. They will give you the necessary tools to determine when the use of a material would be suitable, and how to select the appropriate material.
Part 2: You will then take your learnings from the webinar and create an experiment that you will apply to your classroom. Do you have a student who is struggling with a math concept, and would a math material enable them to grasp the concept better? Try it out! Record your hypothesis, observations, challenges, and successes. You will share your experiment with the other webinar participants, enabling you to collaborate with and learn from a community of scientists.
Part 3: Your experience will culminate with a live video chat, where all webinar participants will discuss their experiences with one another.
Learner Outcomes
- You will learn how to make math tactile in the Secondary environment.
- You will use a scientist’s thinking approach to conduct learning experiments.
- You will learn from other webinar participants and join a community of scientists.
