Introducing Children to the Diversity of Life: A 3-Part Learning Journey

Details

Presented by: Priscilla Spears
For:
Elementary I – II and Secondary I teachers
CPD hours: 1.5
Format: Self-guided webinar, individual experiment, and live video chat
Available: On Demand

Come learn how to teach a new approach to the diversity of life—a central part of Elementary biology—by replacing the Five Kingdom Classification System with the Tree of Life.

This 3-part learning journey consists of an on-demand webinar, an in-person application of your learnings, and a follow-up video chat:

Part 1: You will begin by watching an on-demand webinar in which the presenter will introduce you to the Tree of Life, which is now used by biologists to show life’s diversity. Tree of Life classification has new terms for describing groups and their relationships, which you will become familiar with in this webinar. You will also learn how to use charts to promote an understanding of kingdom lineages.

Part 2: You will then take your learnings from the webinar and apply them to your classroom. Introduce your students to the Tree of Life using the language you’ve recently acquired, and feel comfortable with using charts to explain lineage. Record your observations, challenges, and successes. You will share your experience with the other webinar participants, enabling you to collaborate with and learn from the community.

Part 3: Your experience will culminate with a live video chat, where all webinar participants will discuss their experiences with one another.

Learner Outcomes

  • You will review current science findings, with a specific focus on biology.
  • You will become familiar with the new terms used in diversity of life lessons, including phylogeny, lineage, common ancestor, derived trait, and ancestral trait.
  • You will learn how to evaluate the charts and other materials that children use to learn about the diversity of life.
  • You will learn from other webinar participants.
