Directors and instructors at AMS-affiliated teacher education programs are invited to this half-day workshop led by veteran Montessori educator, Koren Clark.
AMS-affiliated teacher education programs are preparers of the next generation of Montessori teachers and administrators. Thus, it is vital that they model equitable practices, welcome diversity of all kinds, and create and maintain inclusive spaces that will enable the talents of their adult learners to flourish.
Montessori is rooted in humanism, and the values of our community feel especially applicable in the history we are living through today. As educators, it is our responsibility to examine our practices and honor the potential of future teachers from all backgrounds.
“Montessori Beyond My Reach: Welcoming Diversity”
Montessori can be a vehicle to connect you with a truly diverse group of people. By examining how your humanistic values align with Montessori philosophy, you will widen your sphere of influence to include people with whom you may have never previously connected, such as those in overlooked or marginalized populations.
In this workshop, we will examine how unconscious biases may narrow our world views, skew our judgment, and compromise the success of our communities. We will identify barriers to liberating ourselves from these biases, and gain strategies to support the work of creating truly diverse, equitable, and inclusive spaces for adult learners.
Your work will culminate in an action plan that will hold you accountable for making meaningful improvements in your teacher education space.

TEP Ed: Diversity in Montessori will be presented with both on-demand content and a live virtual workshop. On-demand content will be released 1 week prior to the live workshop, and is prerequisite viewing for attendees.
On-Demand Content
Before joining the live presentation, you’ll have access to video content that you can watch on demand. You will continue to have access to this content for 30 days after the event. You will be alerted via email when the on-demand content is ready for viewing.
Live Virtual Workshop
The workshop will take place on Saturday, October 24, 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM (ET). During the workshop there will be time built in for self-reflective work, group discussions, and interactions with your presenter, Koren Clark.
Outcomes
You will come away with:
- An understanding of how humanistic Montessori practices can ground you and connect you to others.
- Insights and strategies for welcoming diversity in relationship to equity and inclusion.
- An understanding of how diversity, equity, and inclusion relate to teacher education programs.
- Strategies to help navigate your subconscious values and biases which may shield you from your own liberation and prevent you from reaching those who need Montessori the most.
- The tools you need to create an action plan for opening your arms to diversity accountability for your teacher education program.
About the Speaker
Koren Clark, MEd (Montessori education), is a Montessori-trained guide with over 20 years in the field of education. She is a graduate of UC Berkeley and has conducted education research internationally, in Zimbabwe, Germany, and Egypt. Koren founded Lotus Blossom Academy, an independent school, and is the designer of KnowThyself Inc., a Montessori materials and professional development organization. She also partners with Wildflower Schools, where she helps teachers develop liberated teacher-led Montessori micro-schools. Koren serves on the board of The Black Montessori Education Fund and the editorial advisory board of Montessori Life magazine. She holds an AMS Elementary I credential, an Administrator credential from New Leaders, and California state-teaching certification.
